Original Pancake House

Its really hard to find a great pancake outside of the Original Pancake house in West Caldwell, New Jersey.  This was a diner back in the 1970s, a seafood restaurant in the 1980s, but from the 1990s on its been the Original Pancake house and I can’t ever recall not seeing a line outside to get in on the weekends.  A place that always has a line out the door and around the building on weekends for over 20 years says a lot.

There are over a dozen different types of pancakes to choose from.  Now, I am not pancake expert, but I can tell you that when I do get them, these are how I want them.  Very thin, not heavy, fluffy and will all fresh ingredients.  The best thing is you can have any of them as a short stack for $2 off the price.  The truth is, who needs more than 3 large pancakes when you are also getting a side order of eggs, meat or whatever?  I personally don’t.  They have a wide variety of sides like farm fresh sausage, their own special brand of bacon which comes from organic free range pigs in Salt Lake City and corned beef hash.  The only thing I can’t figure out is why the Taylor Ham (produced in New Jersey) costs $1 more than the Canadian Bacon.  It should be the other way around, I know Canadian bacon may not come from Canada, but Taylor Ham is known to be produced exclusively right here in New Jersey.  One thing I love but don’t care for at this particular location is the corned beef hash.  I like mine crispy, drier, and not so much fat.

The Red Velvet pancakes have chocolate syrup mixed in, so it tastes more like chocolate.  The coconut was great, but my girlfriend love the Banana Pancakes the best.  Then of course there are the strawberry, blueberry, pecan, raisin, chocolate chip, Swedish creeps and potato pancakes.  But something really amazing, is the German Apple Pancake made from fresh Granny Smith Apples (I saw the basket by the kitchen myself).  It is baked in an oven so the apples caramelize into a sweet gooey syrup along with Sinkiang cinnamon (Xinjiang is Mandarin translated and is a region in the far Western region of China).

The waffles are amazing.  I especially loved the apple served with apple nectar syrup.  In fact, all their pancakes and waffles with fruit are accompanied by fruit syrups with fresh fruit in it such as blueberry compote, strawberry, apple, etc.   IMG_1095IMG_0911

Did I mention the Cinnamon Almond French Toast with Sinkiang cinnamon and very delicious.  So delicious, that my girlfriend wanted to switch because these were even more delicious than hers, which she had ordered before and now this became her new favorite.

All and all, I ate here nearly every day for a week.  There was one day on the weekend we did not feel like waiting 15 minute to get a table, so we went to an IHOP (International House of Pancakes), and there was no comparison.  The pancakes here are thinner, lighter, fluffier and tastier.  And, if you order the omelette, you either have to have a huge appetite or 3 people to share it with.  I can go on and on, but this is a sure fire win with nearly everything on the menu.
