JULIA CHILD’S COCKTAIL AKA ANGOSODA
Julia Child was and is the legend of cooking on TV. A quarter of a century before the debut of the Food Network, she was on PBS cooking up a storm on black & white televisions in the late 1960s and early 1970s. And while she admitted that cocktails are full of empty calories, there was a solution. The Angosoda. Its simply plenty of ice, a dash or two of Angostura bitters, slice of lime squeezed and filled with soda, which could be club, seltzer, or in her case, she preferred the French Perrier sparkling water. Its light, its refreshing, it has that cocktail taste and while Angostura Bitters are nearly 90 proof (44.7% alcohol), but a dash or two won’t give you any more kick than that cup of coffee or jumbo sized cola with all its sugar and caffeine. And, its perfect light late afternoon or pre-dinner cocktail.
Angostura bitters are from Trinidad & Tobago. Its a small bottle but a drop will flavor your whole drink or whatever foods you are preparing. They sell it in supermarkets, check by the cocktail mixers. How they can sell it without a license, I am not sure, but just don’t tell the kids. The ingredients are secret, but the flavor is wonderful. While Julia liked it in a stemmed glass, I prefer it in a rocks or highball glass. It tastes just as good and there is no guilt if you wish to have it one warm summer afternoon or even at lunch in place of a martini lunch. Its a lot more satisfying and flavorful too.
Glass filled with ice
Fill with Club Soda, Seltzer or Sparkling Water
Add 1-2 Dashes of Angostura Bitters
Add 1 Slice Fresh Squeezed Lime
Stir & Enjoy, have another, the alcohol content is barely present.
